WU, an American financial services and communications company, was founded by Ezra Cornell (Cornell) and was headquartered in Meridian, Colorado, US. The company was formed in 1856 through the merger of archrivals The New York and Mississippi Valley Printing Telegraph Company and the New York & Western Union Telegraph Company . The aim of the merger was to create ‘one great telegraph system’ with unified and efficient operations. The newly merged company was named “The Western Union Telegraph Company” on Cornell’s suggestion and thus WU was born. Soon WU bought out other smaller companies and by 1860 its telegraph lines spread out in almost all directions in the US.. |
